Biblical Interpretation

An 8-week course introducing Church leaders to the nature of the Bible by challenging and encouraging them as they learn skills to handle and present the Word of God.

Competencies

  • To engage reading strategies in the use of Scripture that enhance personal growth, critical awareness, and lifelong learning
  • To appropriate the historic witness of the Scripture in its ancient setting by adequate study of the literature, history, and culture of the Bible
  • To expound the meaning of biblical texts using proper methods and principles informed by historic Christian practice and responsive to current needs
  • To interpret diverse portions of the Bible in terms of the whole of Scripture, seeking unity between the two testaments, so that the Bible may function properly in theological reflection and worship by the church
  • To communicate biblical truth through preaching, teaching, writing, and personal witness, or through music, worship, and other appropriate modes

Goals

  • Understand the purpose, goal and practices of biblical interpretation
  • Survey contemporary interpretive approaches in the context of historical practices
  • Apply the principles of a grammatical-historical-theological-practical approach to a biblical passage that will result in a thorough exegesis of the passage
  • Utilize a range of approaches relevant to the interpretation of a particular biblical passage and apply those approaches to other biblical books
  • Possess ample bibliographical materials to guide future study of biblical interpretation
